How recovery works
Recovery from a seed phrase
Install a compatible wallet, choose the restore option, enter the words in order. Every address and balance reappears.
The wallet does not need to be the same brand. The BIP-39 standard is shared across nearly everything made in the last decade, so a phrase generated in one application restores in another. The exception involves derivation paths: occasionally a wallet uses a non-standard path and the restored wallet shows an empty balance despite correct words. The funds are there, and the fix is selecting the right path in the advanced settings.
Do this offline where possible, on a device you trust, and never on a web page.
When the phrase is incomplete
Partial recovery is sometimes possible and depends entirely on how much is missing.
One or two words missing
Recoverable in principle. The word list has 2048 entries and the phrase carries a checksum, so software can test combinations and identify which produce a valid phrase. This takes effort but works.
Word order scrambled
Also recoverable, with more computation, for the same reason.
Four or more words missing
The search space grows past anything practical.
No phrase, no device access
Nothing works. The keys derive from a number nobody stored anywhere else, and no company, court or support desk can produce it.
The scams built on this
Wallet recovery is one of the most reliable fraud categories, precisely because the people searching for it have already lost something and want to believe.
Anyone asking for your seed phrase is stealing from you
No exception exists. A genuine recovery service works with what you have, not with the thing that would make recovery unnecessary.
Upfront fees for guaranteed recovery
The guarantee is impossible if the phrase is gone, so the promise identifies the fraud.
Recovery apps and browser tools
These exist to capture whatever is entered.
Where these operate at scale
The people advertising in replies to public posts about lost wallets are running the same operation at scale.
What a business should have in place
The same failure applies to companies, and it arrives through staff turnover rather than through carelessness.
Reserves held in self-custody sit behind a phrase, and that phrase needs a written procedure covering who holds copies, where they are, and what happens when the person who set it up leaves. A single copy in one employee’s desk is how treasuries disappear.
A business settling through a payment gateway avoids the question for its operating flow entirely, since receipt and settlement happen without anyone managing keys. The full setup is described in the guide to accepting crypto payments.
